PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Pitt volleyball team earned its second conference win of the season today with a three-set victory over Rutgers. The Panthers (13-5, 2-1 Big East) hit .304 against the Scarlet Knights (4-9, 1-2 Big East) and put up seven blocks.
Outside hitter Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne) led the team with 5.67 kills per game and 19 points. She hit .278 and also recorded two blocks and five digs. Junior Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) averaged five blocks per game against the Scarlet Knights. She also had eight digs and hit. 206.
Senior Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) had 40 assists and tied her career high of three service aces against Rutgers. She hit .750 and had one block and six digs. Leading Pitt in blocking was Jessica Moses (North Olmstead, Ohio/Lutheran West) with four total. She also recorded six kills and hit .400.
In game one, the Scarlet Knights were the first to score, but Pitt came back to take the lead, 5-3. Rutgers tied it up at seven and the two teams battled for the lead until the Scarlet Knights pulled ahead, 19-16. Pitt fought back and tied the score at 22 with a kill from Ross. With both teams fighting for the win, Pitt was able to take game one, 33-31. Ross led the team with 10 kills and recorded a .500 hitting percentage. Boroumand put up 14 assists, and Moses led the team with two blocks. The Panthers hit .316 to the Scarlet Knights' .200.
Rutgers started off game two in the lead, but the Panthers quickly tied it up at four and pulled ahead to 12-9. They held off the Scarlet Knights for remainder of the game taking control with a seven-point lead at 22-15. A kill from freshman Meagan Dooley (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) won the game for Pitt, 30-26. Andreyko led the team with eight kills, and Boroumand had 13 assists. The team had two blocks and hit .270.
Pitt didn't let up in game three, holding Rutgers to under 20 points. The Panthers took an early lead after several errors by the Scarlet Knights. A block from Boroumand and Moses gave Pitt a six-point lead, 12-6. The Panthers moved up to a nine-point lead after a kill from freshman Kim Kern (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) made the score 16-7. A service ace from Boroumand clinched game three for Pitt, 30-18. Ross led the team with five kills. Boroumand had 13 assists and two service aces. Kern and Dooley had two blocks each. Pitt hit .324 to Rutgers' .147.
The Panthers will head to Villanova for a 2 p.m. match tomorrow. They will return to Pittsburgh next weekend when they take on Georgetown and South Florida.
