PITTSBURGH-The University of Pittsburgh softball team dropped game one of its doubleheader against Notre Dame, 7-0, this afternoon.
Notre Dame got on the board in the second inning after a wild pitch sent a runner home from third base. Pitt held off any further damage that inning with a strikeout and groundout.
Later in the ball game, the Fighting Irish took a 6-0 advantage in the top of the fifth inning after Meagan Ruthrauff tallied a lead-off home run, deep to center field. Another run scored following a hard shot to right-center.
Pitt had a great opportunity in the sixth after senior Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) earned a lead-off walk and moved to third after junior Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) singled and both of them stole a base. But the Panthers were left on bases with three consecutive strikeouts.
Junior Heather Connor (Reading, Pa./Muhlenburg) doubled with a hard shot that bounced off the center field fence to open the bottom of the seventh but was also stranded.
Junior Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif.Cordova) stole her 17th base of the season, which ties the third-best spot on the single-season list.
Junior Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) recorded four strikeouts in the loss, allowing 13 hits in the game.
