"Overall I was pleased with today," Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt said. "We have a long way to go but I liked the way some things looked today. Being at Heinz Field was good, the atmosphere was good. We were able to get in about 100 plays and we came out healthy which is very important."
Offensively, the Panthers registered six touchdowns and two field goals. Senior quarterback Tyler Palko finished the day 17 of 27 for 172 yards and one touchdown, while sophomore Bill Stull completed 11 of 16 passes for 183 yards and two TDs.
Redshirt freshman wideout Oderick Turner led all receivers with 97 yards on three catches and one touchdown. Sophomore running back Conredge Collins led all rushers with 46 yards on only four attempts, including a long of 39.
"The offense overall looked good," said Wannstedt. "There was good protection, no turnovers and no fumbles. I was encouraged by the way they looked today. Getting those little things right gives you the chance to win."
Sophomore linebacker Scott McKillop had a scrimmage-high 14 tackles. All-
"As a whole, the defense looked good," Wannstedt said. "A few guys really showed up to play today. Developing the defensive line is one of our challenges and I was encouraged today."
Pitt's placekickers were perfect. Senior David Abdul hit all three of his extra points and also connected on a 24-yard field goal. Sophomore Conor Lee also hit three PATs and converted a 49-yard field goal.
Pitt named its 2006 winners of the Ed Conway Award, annually presented to the most improved players of spring drills. This year's recipients are sophomore offensive lineman C.J. Davis (offense), senior linebacker Clint Session (defense) and junior defensive back Kennard Cox (special teams).
