PITTSBURGH - Pitt junior center Marcedes Walker has been named to the prestigious Naismith Award Preseason List as one of the top 50 basketball players in the country. Walker was selected by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors - a collection of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country.
Walker (Philadelphia, Pa./University City) currently averages 15.2 points and 7.7 rebounds a game this season, and recently scored her 1,000th career point, making her the 13th in program history to reach the milestone. The preseason All-Big East selection was also named to the Street & Smith's preseason Terrific 10 honorable mention team and earned first team all-conference honors at the end of her sophomore season.
The Naismith is an annual award which honors the national player of the year in men's and women's college basketball. The preseason list is compiled by considering last season's performances, as well as expectations for the 2006-07 season. The list will be trimmed to 30 in January with the finalists announced in March.
Walker and the Panthers will have the week off for final exams, but travel to the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico, Dec. 19-20 to take on East Carolina and Liberty and will have a neutral site game against Duke at the same venue on Dec. 21.
