Softball Wins Five In Kent State Tournament

KENT, Ohio--The University of Pittsburgh softball team opened fall play this past weekend in the Kent State Invitational with five consecutive wins. Christa Hunter recorded two triples, three RBIs and a run scored, while Francesca DiMaria also drove in three RBIs after hitting three triples.
Pitt jumped into action early on Saturday and defeated the host, Golden Flashes, 3-2, as Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) earned the win from the circle. Jessica Thomas (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) was credited with the game-winning RBI and Heather Connor (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) was 2-2 with a walk in the game.
In the second game of the day, Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) picked up a win against Ashland, 4-1. Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) hit two triples and collected three RBIs, while DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) posted two runs and two hits.
Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) connected on the game-winning hit to slide the Panthers past Toledo, 3-2, and round out the day's tripleheader. Morgan Howard (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) hit the game-tying double that drove in two runs, allowing Belardinelli to go 2-0 on the day.
Bostick started Sunday with a 3-0 shutout over Youngstown State. Lisa McGregor (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford Senior) was 2-3 with a double, while Hunter (Sacramento, Calif./Hiram Johnson West) scored a run after her triple.
Hunter hit another triple going, 3-4 and driving in three runs to sneak Pitt past Ohio State, 5-4. Connor was walked three times and scored twice. Kaitlyn Schuster (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City) entered the game and earned the win from the circle.
Pitt will conclude its fall season in the two-day Robert Morris Tournament on Oct. 1. The Panthers face Gannon at 1 p.m.
