Panthers Finish Second at Delaware Asics Volleyball Invitational

NEWARK, Del. - After a tough loss to eventual Delaware Asics Invitational champion San Francisco on Saturday afternoon, the Pitt volleyball team responded with a 3-0 sweep of New Hampshire to finish in second place.
The Panthers (2-1) allowed the first point of game one and then went on a tear, defeating the Wildcats (0-3) by a score of 30-9. The set featured four consecutive aces by Pitt freshman Stephanie Ross (Dayton, Ohio/Chaminade-Julienne).
The Panthers wrapped up the match with wins of 30-16 and 30-18 in the second and third sets, respectively, to earn the victory. Pitt hit a season-best .326 and held UNH to a hitting percentage of .022 in the three games.
Outside hitters Gini Ullery (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) and Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) led the way for the Panthers with 11 kills apiece. Ullery hit .320 with two service aces and three digs, while Andreyko connected at a .455 clip with two assists, two service aces, nine digs and two blocks.
Ross ended up with a season-best six of the Panthers' 11 aces and added six digs, playing in just two of the three sets. Sophomore middle Ashley Creighton (Brandon, Manitoba/Crocus Plains) had her second strong performance of the young season with eight kills in 12 attempts for a .667 hitting percentage and a team-best three blocks.
Megan McGrane (Muncie, Ind./Delta) had a rare kill from the libero position and added a match-high 14 digs, while junior setter Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber) had 26 assists, seven digs and two kills in the win.
The Panthers will play at the FSU Invitational next weekend in Tallahassee, Fla., before the home opener the following weekend at the Pitt Invitational.
NOTES: Senior Ashley White (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East/Indiana) had two kills and three digs off the bench in game three...Andreyko finished the tournament with a team-best 44 kills to go along with 24 digs, five service aces and five blocks...Ullery hit just under .300 for the weekend with 33 kills and 21 digs...For their efforts, Andreyko and McGrane were named to the All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the final match.
