5/6/2005
PITTSBURGH?
The Women & Girls of Distinction ceremony honors those individuals who reflect the goals of the Girl Scout organization: building girls of confidence, courage and character. Berenato was recognized for her work in the Pittsburgh community since becoming the Panthers? head coach on May 1, 2003. A two-time recipient of the State of Georgia Division I Coach of the Year award while at Georgia Tech, she recently won her 300th career game over Georgetown and led the Panthers to their highest victory total in five years.
Berenato, a former Girl Scout herself, was the Sports & Fitness honoree at this year?s ceremony and has made numerous community appearances, including the 2004 Mellon Bank United Way Kick Off and the Chalk Talk Basketball Clinic at Kean University. She was also a featured speaker at banquets for the YWCA Westmoreland Sportswoman of the Year, Riverside High School and St. Bonaventure Junior High. An active supporter of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Race for the Cure, she was honored by the Jesse Draper Boys? and Girls? Club as the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Volunteer Award winner.
"It means a great deal to receive this honor from the Girl Scouts organization and the Trillium Council," Berenato said. "I?m deeply thankful to Chancellor Mark Nordenberg for nominating me and to the Girl Scouts for all of their hard work in communities around the world."
