Volleyball Releases 2005 Schedule

PITTSBURGH?The Pitt volleyball team, looking for its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament, released its 2005 schedule on Wednesday. The 29-game regular-season slate features seven opponents that joined Pitt at the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and five that advanced to at least the second round.
The 2005 season will also be the first for the new-look Big East Conference. Fifteen teams will play a round-robin regular season with the top six teams advancing to the Big East Championships, Nov. 18-20 in Louisville, Ky. Cincinnati, DePaul, Louisville, Marquette and South Florida will be competing for the first time as Big East members.
The Panthers will begin the season at the Delaware Invitational on August 26-27. In addition to the host Blue Hens, Pitt will play San Francisco and New Hampshire. Pitt will also play in the FSU Invitational in Tallahassee on September 2-3. The Panthers' opponents will be South Carolina of the SEC, Mercer and the host Seminoles from the ACC.
After a cross-town meeting at Duquesne on Sept. 6, the Panthers will host the Pittsburgh Invitational on Sept. 9-10. In the four-team field with Pitt are 2004 NCAA Tournament teams Maryland and American, as well as Miami (Ohio). The other five NCAA participants on the Panthers' schedule are: Ohio State (Sept. 16 at Ohio State Buckeye Classic), at Louisville (Oct. 22), Notre Dame (Fitzgerald Field House, Nov. 6), at Long Beach State (Nov. 25) and at UC-Irvine (Nov. 26).
The 12-game home schedule includes the Pittsburgh Invitational and visits by new Big East members Marquette and DePaul, as well as a showdown with defending Big East champion Notre Dame. For ticket information, call the Pitt ticket office at (412) 648-PITT (7488).
