Francesca DiMaria Named Big East Softball Player of the Week
4/6/2005
PITTSBURGH?Junior second baseman Francesca DiMaria was named the Big East Player of the Week after leading the Panthers to a sweep of Rutgers in their Big East doubleheader opener.
DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) hit .750 in the Panthers' four games last week, collecting 12 hits in 16 at-bats, including two 4-for-4 clips against Youngstown State and the Scarlet Knights. The four hits in the first game against the Penguins and in the second game against Rutgers tied the Pitt school record for hits in a single game.
She scored three run, drove in three more and was perfect in the field, collecting three doubles and a triple among her 12 hits. DiMaria raised her batting average 104 points in the four games, now hitting a team-leading .342 in 2005. She had missed the Panthers' previous action in a tournament at James Madison and hadn't played since March 12 before making her way into the team's record books.
The Panthers will play their home opener tomorrow at Trees Field against St. Francis (Pa.) before returning to Big East play on Saturday against Notre Dame.
