Baseball Drops 2-0 Decision to St. John's

The Panthers continue their series with St. John's at noon on Monday.

PITTSBURGH ? Pittsburgh could not overcome a strong pitching performance from Anthony Vavaro as it dropped a 2-0 decision to St. John's on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers fell to 13-9 overall and 1-4 in the Big East while the Red Storm improved to 12-9 and 2-1 in the conference.

The Red Storm got on the board early by scoring one run off two hits in the bottom of the first inning. Jim Martin doubled to left field and then scored on a P.J. Antoniato single to center.

St. John?s scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh, giving them a 2-0 lead over Pittsburgh.

Despite their efforts, the Panthers were unable to spark their offense and had only four hits and no runs in the game.

Anthony Varvaro picked up the win for the Red Storm, improving his record to 4-2 on the year. Varvaro allowed only four hits and struck out 17 batters. Craig Hansen got his fourth save of the season. Hansen did not allow any hits or runs and struck out one batter in the ninth inning.

Pittsburgh?s starter, Billy Muldowney (West Chester, Pa/West Chester East), suffered the loss on the mound. Muldowney?s record drops to 1-2 on the season.

Peter Parise led the Panthers with two hits.

The Panthers finish up their series with St. John?s in New York on Monday in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for noon, followed by a second game at 3 p.m.

NOTES: Each team turned a double play in the game...Pittsburgh left four men on base and St. John's left five...the Panthers had two errors in the game while St. John's had only one.
