Panthers Drop JMU Dukes Invitational Championship
3/20/2005
HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Pitt softball team had a five-game winning streak snapped by host James Madison in the championship game of the JMU Dukes Invitational on Sunday.
The Panthers (11-14) were defeated by the Dukes (13-13) by a score of 5-1, finishing the three-day tournament in second place with a 4-1 record.
James Madison got on the board with three runs in the first inning off Pitt starting pitcher Christa Hunter (Sacramento, Calif./Hiram Johnson West) and added two insurance runs in the sixth inning for the four-run win. The Panthers' only run came in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by freshman Jessica Dignon (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). Dignon's one-out single scored shortstop Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova), who singled to lead off the inning.
Hunter (6-7) went 5 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs before giving way to sophomore Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine). Bostick got the final five outs, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. Hellon and Dignon had two hits apiece to combine for four of the Panthers' five hits in the game.
Pittsburgh will be at Robert Morris for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 23.
