Canisius' Matt Rath netted his team-leading third goal of the season in the 72nd minute for the lone score of the game. Jason Wild took a throw-in from the left sideline and launched the ball into the penalty box where Brian Brehm got a head on it. The ball went around like a pinball until it landed at Rath's feet. Rath shot low to the right to beat Pitt goalkeeper Jordan Marks.
The Griffs had a chance to put the game away with 5:17 to play as Chris Carpenter got the ball on the right side in the penalty area with no one between him and Marks. Carpenter drilled on shot that Marks saved, then corralled the rebound and took another shot, which the goalkeeper stopped.
Pitt continued to pressure in the offensive end, looking to even the score late in the game. Canisius goalkeeper Matt Houghton, who finished with eight saves, made a diving stop on a Dwayne Grant-Higgins shot. Houghton also snared a cross into the box with five seconds left in regulation to halt a Panther offensive attack.
