Pittsburgh Announces 2004-05 Women's Basketball Schedule
9/8/2004
PITTSBURGH
Pittsburgh will play seven teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year, including the Huskies on Wednesday, Jan. 26. The 27-game regular-season schedule also includes a trip to Storrs, Conn., to battle UConn as well as hosting in-state rival and perennial powerhouse Penn State (Dec. 9).
Big East teams play five teams twice and six teams once for the 2004-05 campaign. Pittsburgh plays Connecticut, Rutgers, St. John?s, Providence and Syracuse twice each. Additionally, the Panthers will host Villanova (Feb. 2), Notre Dame (Feb. 5) and West Virginia (Feb. 16), while traveling to Seton Hall (Jan. 19), Georgetown (Jan. 22) and Boston College (Jan. 29).
"We?re excited about our non-conference and Big East Conference schedules this year," head coach Agnus Berenato said. "It will be a challenge for our team by playing Connecticut twice, but it will be a great experience for us. We only play two home games before our conference schedule begins so it will be a chance to get our younger players the opportunity to find out how to build a championship program and record wins on the road.
"We are going to be a young team this year, but playing in what I believe is the best conference in the country will only help us in the future. We look forward to hosting the Huskies as well as battling our rivals, Penn State and West Virginia, on our home floor at the Petersen Events Center."
Pittsburgh opens the season on Nov. 23 as it travels to North Carolina A&T. The Panthers also participate in two tournaments on back-to-back weekends, including the UNC-Greensboro Tournament on Nov. 26-27 and the Stony Brook Tournament on Dec. 3-4.
The Panthers open their conference slate on Sunday, January 2, at Syracuse. The Big East Championship is scheduled for March 5-8 at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, Conn.
The Panthers officially begin practice on Saturday, October 16.
