Volleyball Has Six-Match Winning Streak Snapped Against Dayton

Dayton, Pittsburgh (9-4) and Long Island (10-4) all finished 2-1 in the tournament but Dayton had a 7-4 games record to win the tournament title. Pittsburgh then took second based on a victory over the Blackbirds earlier in the day on Saturday. Miller became the eighth Panther player to record 1,000 career kills with six in the first set of the 3-1 loss to the Flyers. Miller ended up with 22 putaways for the evening to go along with three blocks and now has 1,016 for her career.
McGrane, the Panthers? third all-time leader in digs, broke her own school record for a single match with 38 against Dayton. She had a total of 85 digs in the Panthers? three weekend matches and for her efforts was named to the All-Tournament Team, along with sophomore setter Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber), who had 57 assists and 19 digs against Dayton to give her a total of 176 assists and 39 digs for the three matches. Junior Gini Ullery (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) posted a double-double with 21 kills and 12 digs on Saturday evening, as did freshman Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin), with 17 kills and 10 digs. Andreyko led the Panthers with a .289 hitting percentage with just four errors in 45 attempts.
Dayton, however, bounced back from losing the first set and held off the Panthers in each of the next three to earn the win. Faye Barhorst had a Fitzgerald Field House-record eight block solos and 10 total blocks, to go along with 16 kills and a .378 hitting percentage. Barhorst was named the Pitt Classic MVP for her efforts and was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Christy Utnage, who had 15 kills and 17 digs against the Panthers, and Robynne Green, who chipped in with nine kills, five digs and five blocks.
Long Island placed third and had Christina Pintilie on the All-Tournament Team after her efforts in the Blackbirds? 3-1 win over Southern Illinois in the fifth match of the tournament. Southern Illinois? Erica Miller rounded out the All-Tournament Team.
The Panthers will visit Normal, Ill., next weekend for two matches against the Indiana State Sycamores and the host Illinois State Redbirds on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2-3.
