Pittsburgh Outlasts Previously Unbeaten Alabama at TIS Bookstore Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Pittsburgh volleyball team won a back-and-forth battle over previously unbeaten Alabama, 3-2, in its second match of the TIS Bookstore Invitational at Indiana University.
The Panthers (6-3) got 26 kills from Gini Ullery (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) and 20 putaways from senior middle Megan Miller (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) for their third consecutive victory. Pittsburgh has a chance to win the tournament with a victory over host Indiana tonight in the final match.
Pittsburgh held off the Crimson Tide (8-1) in the first set by a score of 30-27 before falling behind in the second set and dropping a 30-23 decision. The Panthers and Tide traded off the third and fourth sets before Pittsburgh came back from an 8-6 deficit to win the fifth and deciding set on a kill by sophomore setter Azadeh Boroumand (Red Deer, Alberta/Thurber). Boroumand had eight kills and just one error in 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage, to go along with 50 assists, eight digs and two blocks. Ullery hit .339 and Miller swung at a .429 clip as the Panthers were able to hit .285 as a team.
The Panthers got major defensive contributions from junior libero Megan McGrane (Muncie, Ind./Delta) with 26 digs and senior Lindsey Macke (Ft. Thomas, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) had 12 digs. Pittsburgh finishes the tournament with a match against the host Hoosiers tonight at 8 p.m., EST.
