PITTSBURGH
Hiser (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown), who was named the Big East Player of the Year last week and a first-team all-conference selection, broke the school record for home runs (21) and RBIs (67) in a single season as both marks ranked third and 15th nationally, respectively. He also was sixth in the NCAA in slugging percentage (.758) and finished among the single-season leaders in school history in runs scored (57) and hits (70).
On the mound, he finished with a 5-1 record and a 4.40 earned run average with one save. He tallied 49 strikeouts in 61.3 innings pitched on the year. Last week, Hiser was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
For the season, Hiser led the Panthers to the Big East Championships for the first time since 2000 and the most wins in a season (38) since 1995. Pittsburgh finished with a 38-18 record and tied for second in the conference with 17 league wins, which also was a school record.
