PITTSBURGH' "Forget the pencil,' Athlon Sports writes of Pittsburgh offensive tackle Rob Petitti. 'Ink him in as an All-American."
Accordingly, Athlon has named the 6-foot-6, 335-pound Petitti to its 2004 All-America Team, published in the magazine's recently released Eastern College Football edition. The senior was named a third-team All-American.
Petitti (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) has been a fixture at left tackle the last three years and enters this season with an active streak of 38 consecutive starts. A largely unheralded recruit when he signed with the Panthers in 2000, Petitti enters his final season as a viable national honors candidate. In addition to All-America honors, he has earned consideration for this year's Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award.
Petitti was selected All-Big East Conference each of the last two seasons, including first-team honors in 2003. He is the first Pittsburgh offensive lineman to repeat as an All-Big East performer since Ruben Brown, now a perennial All-Pro, was a three-time selection from 1992-94.
Also in this year's Athlon College Football issue, Walt Harris is featured in an article entitled 'Coaches Forum,' where 12 coaches sound off on various topics.
Eight Panthers players were named to Athlon's All-Big East Team, including first-team selections in defensive tackle Vince Crochunis, defensive end Thomas Smith, free safety Tez Morris and Petitti. Defensive tackle Dan Stephens was a second-team honoree, while tailback Raymond Kirkley, receiver Greg Lee and kicker J.B. Gibboney were third-team picks.
