Softball Splits Doubleheader With Robert Morris

The Panthers took game one, 2-1, while Robert Morris took game two, 3-2, in extra innings.

MOON TWP, Pa.-The University of Pittsburgh split its afternoon doubleheader with cross-town rival Robert Morris University.  The Panthers would take game one, 2-1, while the Colonials took game two, 3-2, in eight innings.

Robert Morris (12-33-1) would get on the board first in game one as Ashlee Smith?s RBI single to right field gave the Colonials the 1-0 lead.  The lead would not last long as Pittsburgh (21-34, Big East 3-13) tied the game at their next at-bat.  Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) singled to send Beth Gill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) home from third to tie the game at one.

Pittsburgh was able to break the tie and secure the win in the sixth inning as pinch runner Desiree Dye (Muskegon, Mich./Muskegon) scored on single by freshman Heather Connor (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg).  Connor went 2-for-3 at the plate in game one.

Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y. /Union-Endicott) recorded the win for the Panthers as she allowed one run on four hits, while striking out five and walking one. 

The scoreless tie was not broken in game two until the fourth inning as Christa Hunter (Sacramento, Calif./Hiram Johnson West) connected on an RBI single to give the Panthers the lead.  Robert Morris would tie the game in the bottom half of the fifth as Brandi Doerschner drove Ashley Riggin home  for the score.

The game would enter into extra innings before either team scored.  The Panthers would break the tie in their half of the eighth inning. Gill was placed on second due to international tie breaker rules.  Gill would then advance to third on a sacrifice bunt.  Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) singled to score the go-ahead run. 

The Colonials would tie the game in their half of the eighth inning on a wild pitch by Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine).  With bases loaded, Belardinelli entered the contest and walked the winning run.

Bostick finished the day three runs, two earned, on seven hits, while striking out eight and walking five.

The Panthers enter their final weekend of regular season play as they travel to Boston College Friday, May 7 for an afternoon doubleheader. Game time is set for noon.  Pittsburgh will then head south to face the Huskies of UConn on Sunday at 11 a.m.
