PITTSBURGH
Pittsburgh (38-16, 17-9 Big East) is one of three conference teams ranked in the poll along with Notre Dame (No. 7) and St. John?s (No. 34). The Panthers, who have won 10 of their past 14 games, were also ranked during the 2002 season in the NCBWA poll, reaching as high as No. 32.
The Big East?s top hitting team (.320), Pittsburgh enters the Big East Championships this week as the No. 3 seed behind top-seeded Notre Dame and second-seeded St. John?s. No. 4 Boston College will also take part in the four-team tournament. The Panthers battle the Red Storm on Thursday night in the opening round with first pitch slated for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Radio 970 with Bill Hillgrove and Dick Groat calling the action.
