Pittsburgh Baseball Falls to Villanova, 8-5, in Series Finale

The Panthers return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Buffalo.

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. ? Pittsburgh?s baseball team could not complete the three-game sweep over Villanova as it fell in the series finale, 8-5, on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers dropped to 28-12 overall and 12-5 in the Big East while the Wildcats improved to 25-18-1 and 7-13 in the conference.

Pittsburgh got on the board first as it plated a single run in the second inning. Jim Negrych led off the inning with a single and would later score on an RBI-single from Mike Scanzano.

The Panthers tacked on another run in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead as Tom Cashman blasted a solo home run, his eighth of the year, to lead off the frame.

However, Villanova came right back in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score at 2-2 after Brian Newbold hit a two-run shot to left center field.

The Wildcats took control of the game in the sixth inning by scoring five times on five hits. The lead was stretched to 8-2 in the seventh with another Villanova run before Pittsburgh came back with a rally in the ninth.

The Panthers scored three runs in the top of the last inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Bryan Spamer, but that was all the closer they could get as they fell 8-5.

Paul Nardozzi took the loss on the mound for Pittsburgh, working 5.1 innings and allowing six runs and six hits.

Negrych finished with three hits for the Panthers while Spamer added two.

Pittsburgh returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Buffalo for a 3 p.m. game.
