PITTSBURGH ? The Pittsburgh softball team improved to 16-20 with a doubleheader sweep of visiting St. Francis (Pa.) at Trees Field on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers defeated the Red Flash by a score of 12-0 in five innings in game one and outlasted St. Francis, 3-1, in game two.
Sophomore Christa Hunter (Sacramento, Calif./Hiram Johnson West) hit her first two home runs of the season, one in each game and finished the day with four RBIs, reaching base in all five plate appearances (two home runs, two walks, hit by pitch). Junior Casey Pickard (Newhall, Calif./William S. Hart) also connected on a three-run home run in game one, her second of the season and 10th of her career. Pickard was 3-for-3 in game one with four RBIs.
Pitching was also a strength for the Panthers as freshman Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) pitched four shutout innings in game one, allowing just two hits, no walks and struck out three Red Flash batters. Hunter pitched the final inning and had two strikeouts to her credit.
Fellow freshman Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) went the distance in game two, allowing just three hits in seven innings and one run with two strikeouts and one walk. Bostick improved to 9-12 with the victory in game one while Belardinelli is now 7-7 on the season with the win in game two.
The Panthers will visit Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday, April 10 for a conference doubleheader beginning at noon.
