Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Boston College

The Panthers took the first game 9-4, while the Eagles won game two 4-2 in 10 innings.

PITTSBURGH?The University of Pittsburgh baseball team split its Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Boston College with the Panthers winning the first game 9-4 in seven innings and the Eagles taking the second 4-2 in 10 innings.

Pittsburgh (16-5, 4-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and never looked back as they touched up Big East Preseason Pitcher of the Year Chris Lambert. The Pittsburgh offense would record six hits and eight runs (six earned) off Lambert before he was pulled after 3.1 innings of work.

Freshman second baseman Jim Negrych (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games by going 2-for-3 from the plate including a double and an RBI.

Senior catcher Alex Rybczak (Chili, NY/Monroe CC) belted his first homerun of the season in the second inning off Lambert?s first offering. Rybczak finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Senior Nick Evangelista (Shoemakersville, Pa./Louisburg College) earned his third win of the season by working 6.2 innings striking out six Eagles? hitters.

In the second game, the Pittsburgh offense was held in check as Eagles? starter Kevin Shepard held the Panthers to two runs and three hits in 8.1 innings of work. However the two runs by the Panthers were enough to send the game into extra frames with the score tied at two.

In the top of the 10^th the Eagles plated two runs off Pittsburgh reliever T.J. Gornati (Kersey, Pa./St. Mary?s) to take the win.

Sophomore centerfielder Ben Copeland (Bradford, Pa. Bradford) had two singles in the game, while senior shortstop Bryan Spamer (Harrisburg, Pa./Redland) added a triple and the game-tying RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

The Panthers return to action Sunday afternoon at Trees Field as they close their three-game series with Boston College. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
