Softball Drops Big East Doubleheader To Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I.-The University of Pittsburgh dropped its weekend doubleheader, 4-2 and 6-2, to Providence College Sunday at Raymond Field.

In game one, Providence (30-18-1, Big East 7-8) would take a 2-0 lead in the third. Pittsburgh (18-28, Big East 3-9) battled back the fifth as Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) connected on her sixth double of the season. Hellon would later score on a sacrifice fly. Christa Hunter (Sacramento, Calif./Hiram Johnson West) belted a home run in the next inning to tie the game. This was Hunter?s fourth home run of the season. The Friars would post two runs in their half of the ninth inning to secure the win.

Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) pitched six-plus innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits while walking striking out two.

The Panthers would take the an early 1-0 lead in the second game as pinch runner Morgan Howard (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored on an error. Providence scored one run in the third before knocking in five runs in the fourth. Pittsburgh posted a run in the sixth on a RBI double by Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble).

Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) pitched the complete game allowing six runs (two earned) on 12 hits, while striking out two.

The Panthers return home Wednesday, April 28 for an afternoon doubleheader against Canisius. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
