Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader from New York Tech

Pittsburgh scored a combined 20 runs, while belting eight homeruns and 25 hits in the two games.

PITTSBURGH?The University of Pittsburgh baseball team swept its doubleheader against the New York Tech Bears by scores of 9-3 and 11-3 on Saturday afternoon at Trees Field.

Pittsburgh (22-9) belted a total of eight homeruns, while scoring 20 runs on 25 hits in the contests. The four homeruns in each game established a new season-high for homeruns in a game. The Panthers have hit a total of 33 homeruns on the season, which eclipses last season?s total of 28.

In game one, senior pitcher Nick Evangelista (Shoemakersville, Pa./Louisburg College) tossed six innings of scoreless baseball and struck out four to earn his fifth win of the season. Evangelista held the Bears? offense to only four hits and extended his scoreless innings streak to 13.

Leading the way for the Panthers was redshirt senior P.J. Hiser (Hagerstown, Md./Hagerstown C.C.) who went 2-for-4 from the plate including his 12^th homerun of the season and two RBIs, while freshman second baseman Jim Negrych (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) was 3-for-4 from the plate with his fourth round tripper and 12^th double of the season.

Also going deep for the Panthers was catcher Alex Rybczak (Chili, NY/Monroe C.C.) and leftfielder David Cline (Mercersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy).

In game two, Pittsburgh?s offense picked up where it left off as Peter Parise (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman), Bryan Spamer (Harrisburg, Pa./Red Land), Tony Marciante (Connellsville, Pa. Connellsvile) and Tom Cashman (East Amherst, NY/Erie C.C.) went deep for seven of the Panthers? 11 runs.

The Panthers used two hits apiece from Parise, Negrych, Hiser and Cashman to lead Pittsburgh?s offense to 14 hits in the contest.

Pittsburgh starter Andrew Kuss (Marcellus, NY/Onondaga C.C.) picked up his third win of the season by tossing six innings of four hit baseball with four strikeouts. Kuss sat down 12 consecutive Bears hitters from the third to sixth innings.

The Panthers return to action Sunday, April 18 as they complete their three game series against New York Tech in their first-ever game at Falconi Field the home of the Washington Wild Things in Washington, Pa.. Admission and parking are free for the game with the first pitch set for noon.
