HOMESTEAD, FLA.?The University of Pittsburgh baseball team belted a season-high 22 hits and 16 runs in a 16-2 route of Temple in the third game of the Homestead Challenge on Monday night.
Senior first baseman Tom Cashman (East Amherst, NY/ Erie Comm. College) had a career night has he hit two three-run home runs to register a career-high six RBIs in the game. The two homeruns in the game were also a career-best and marked the second time this season that a Panthers? hitter had accomplished the feat, the last being red-shirt senior P.J. Hiser (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown CC) against New Orleans. Hiser, also had a solid game at the plate as he went two-for-three with three RBIs and a double.
Big East Co-Player of the Week Ben Copeland (Bradford, PA/Bradford) continued his hot hitting streak as he extended his hitting streak to six games by going four-for-six from the plate with two doubles. Freshman Peter Parise (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) had a career-high four hits in six plate appearances in the game and added three RBIs, a double and a stolen base. Both Copeland and Parise?s four hits mark the second time in as many days that a Pittsburgh hitter has reached the mark, as Copeland became the first yesterday.
Freshman second baseman Jim Negrych (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) added to the Pittsburgh offense as he went three-for-four from the plate with three RBIs. Negrych is seven for his last nine from the plate and continues to play solid defense.
Redshirt freshman Mike Muzeka (Lake Mary, FL/Lake Mary) recorded his first career hit on his first plate appearance of the season.
Pittsburgh (4-2) starting pitcher Jeff Barnyak (Sandy Ridge, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) earned his first win of the season as he went five innings scattering six hits and striking out five Temple batters.
The Panthers return to action Tuesday afternoon as they take on Mount St. Mary?s at 1:30 at Homestead Sports Complex.
