Softball Drops 9-2 and 7-4 Decisions To Winthrop

The Panthers will begin tournament play Friday at the Winthrop Invitational.

ROCK HILL, SC ? In its first doubleheader of the 2004 season, the University of Pittsburgh fell to Winthrop University, 9-2 and 7-4, Tuesday at Terry Field.
Winthrop (11-9-1) got off to an explosive start in game one, scoring seven runs in the first inning alone. Pittsburgh (6-11) scored a run in the second when Casey Pickard (Newhall, Calif./William S. Hart) stole home off a double steal, and the Panthers added another run in the fourth when Heather Andrews (Zelienople, Pa./Riverside) scored on Jen O?Donnell?s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) ground out single.
Catherine Cashion scored for Winthrop in the fifth and yet another homerun in the sixth to bring the score to 9-2. Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, Pa./Union-Endicott) took the loss for Pittsburgh.
In second game of the afternoon, Pittsburgh got on the scoreboard first when Beth Gill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) scored off Andrews? sacrifice fly. Winthrop tied the game in the fourth and then took the lead in the fifth.
After Pittsburgh scored a run in the top of the sixth, the Lady Eagles struck back in their half of the inning with a four-run effort. Winthrop went into the top of the seventh with a 7-2 lead.
The Panthers did not quit, as Jessica Thomas (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) and Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) scored to bring the score to 7-4. However, solid pitching from the Lady Eagles made sure the comeback attempt fell short, striking out O?Donnell to end the game. Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) took the loss for the Panthers.
Pittsburgh will be in action Friday when they begin play in the Winthrop Ringor Invitational. The Panthers will face Hartford at noon and Akron at 6 p.m.
