PITTSBURGH?The University of Pittsburgh baseball team earned a 3-1 rain-shortened five-inning win over Kent State Wednesday afternoon at Trees Field.
Despite the conditions, Pittsburgh (15-4) utilized timely hitting and good base running to earn its fourth consecutive win and 10th win in its last 11 contests.
Senior pitcher P.J. Hiser (Hagerstown, MD/Hagerstown CC), the current Big East Player of the Week, was 2-for-2 from the plate including his ninth home run of the 2004 season. Hiser?s two-run home run in the fourth inning broke the 1-1 tie and proved to be the difference in the game.
Freshman starting pitcher Paul Nardozzi (Victor, NY/Victor) picked up the win to improve his record to 2-1, while freshman relief pitcher Mike Bassage (Hornell, NY/Hornell) recorded his first career save.
Freshman second baseman Jim Negrych (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) went 1-for-3 on the afternoon to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 11 games.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 3 for a doubleheader against Big East-foe Boston College. First pitch is set for noon at Trees Field.
