SACRAMENTO, Calif. -In the final game of the Capital Classic, the University of Pittsburgh extended its winning streak to four by defeating host Sacramento State, 2-1, Sunday afternoon.
Pittsburgh (11-15) and Sacramento State (15-14) battled through three scoreless innings until the Panthers posted a run in the bottom of the fourth. With runners on second and third and two outs, Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) singled to left field, sending Heather Andrews (Zelienople, Pa./Riverside) home from third. Pittsburgh?s lead would not last long as the Hornets posted a run in their half of the inning.
Both squads went 1-2-3 in their next inning at bat. With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Andrews connected on her third double of the weekend. Jen O?Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) singled and advanced to second on the throw. Andrews would score, giving Pittsburgh the lead.
Pittsburgh?s defense would keep Sacramento State from scoring in their final at-bat of the game. On the mound, Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) allowed five hits, striking out two.
The Panthers are next in action when they travel to College Park, Md. for the Maryland Invitational March 27-28.
