Softball Defeats Tennessee State 6-1 In Extra Innings

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-A five-run eighth inning gave Pittsburgh a 6-1 victory over Tennessee State Saturday in the second day of play at the Capital Classic. Pittsburgh (10-15) extends their winning streak to three.

After three scoreless innings, the Tigers would be the first to score in the bottom of the fourth, but their lead wouldn?t last long as the Panthers tied the score in their next at-bat. Jessica Thomas (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) led off the inning with a single to right center field. Sheena Hellon?s (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova) sacrifice bunt sent the pinch runner, Beth Gill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), to second. Gill would then advance to third on a wild pitch. Christa Hunter?s (Sacramento, Calif./Hiram Johnson West) single sent Gill home for the score.

Pittsburgh had several opportunities to take the lead, but could not capitalize and the game was sent into extra innings. Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) was placed on second due to the international tie breaker rule. After the first two batters flied out, Jen O?Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) stepped to the plate and doubled to center field, sending DiMaria home from second. Thomas reached first base on an error by the Tigers? outfield and then advanced to second, sending O?Donnell home for the score. Hellon singled to left field, advancing Thomas to third. The next batter walked and Hellon went to third as Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) stepped to the plate and unleashed her second triple of the weekend, giving Pittsburgh a five-run advantage. Scarf went 3-for-4 at the plate, recording three RBIs.

Solid pitching from Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) would secure the Panther win. Bostick pitched two innings, striking out four. Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) started on the mound for Pittsburgh, allowing four hits and one run in five innings of work.

Pittsburgh will face tournament Sacramento State at 9 a.m. (PST) Sunday in the final day of play at the Capital Classic.
