SACRAMENTO, Calif.-A four-run fifth inning that included Joey Scarf?s (Humble, Texas/Humble) first career triple lifted Pittsburgh to a 4-3 victory over Long Island Friday at the Capital Classic Tournament.
After four scoreless innings, Long Island would post three runs in the top of the fifth inning. In Pittsburgh?s (8-15) half of the fifth, Beth Gill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) would reach base on an fielding error. Gill would advance to second as the next batter grounded out. Jen O?Donnell (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) stepped to the plate and singled to center field, driving in Gill from second for the score. Missy Smith (Clackamas, Ore./Clackamas) would single, advancing O?Donnell to third. Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) reached first on a fielding error, advancing Smith to third. O?Donnell would score on the play.
With two outs, Scarf stepped to the plate and belted the games only triple giving Pittsburgh a one-run lead. Solid pitching from the freshman duo Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) and Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) preserved the Panthers? lead.
Bostick pitched five innings allowing eight hits and three runs, striking out six. Belardinelli was credited with the save, pitching two innings.
Pittsburgh will face Saint Mary?s (Calif.) at 12:30 p.m. (PST) and Tennessee State at 3 p.m. Saturday on the Second day of play at the Capital Classic.
