HOMESTEAD, FLA.?The University of Pittsburgh baseball team used another solid pitching performance and an explosive offense to down Iona 9-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Homestead Challenge.
Junior starting pitcher Andrew Kuss (Marcellus, NY/Onondaga CC) tossed 8.1 innings in his first career start for the Panthers. Kuss allowed only four hits and one earned run in his first career victory as he struck out a career-high 12 Gael hitters.
Freshman second baseman Jim Negrych (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) turned in a two-for-four performance from the plate including a three-run homerun to put the game out of reach. Negrych finished the game with a career-best four RBIs.
Peter Parise (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) had three hits in five plate appearances including two doubles and an RBI. Sophomore centerfielder Ben Copeland (Bradford,PA/Bradford) added two hits in the game to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. Copeland would belt a triple, his second of the season, to record an RBI as well.
The Panthers complete their double header this evening as they take on Manhattan College in the historic 2,000th overall game of the Homestead Challenge. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
