ROCK HILL, S.C. ? The Pittsburgh softball team dropped three of four contests at the Winthrop Ringor Invitational on Friday and Saturday, but had numerous highlights.
Junior first baseman Casey Pickard (Newhall, Calif./William S. Hart) capped off the Panthers' 4-2 win over Hartford on Friday with a two-run walkoff home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. She then went 4-for-4 at the plate against Akron in game two on Friday, connecting on three doubles and driving in all four Panthers runs.
Freshman pitcher Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) earned the victory in the Hartford game, allowing just three hits and two runs in eight innings of work. It was her fifth win of the season. Fellow freshman pitcher Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine) allowed just four hits in seven innings against Akron but the Panthers lost a tough 5-4 decision with two runs in the bottom of the seventh frame.
In Saturday's action, Pittsburgh (7-14) allowed three runs in the bottom of the second inning to East Tennessee State but fought back to a 4-3 deficit after scoring in the third, fourth and fifth innings. ETSU added a run in the fifth for the 5-3 win. Belardinelli allowed just five hits in the loss to the Buccaneers. Offensively, freshman Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble) hit her first collegiate home run and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Sophomore Francesca DiMaria (Pittsburgh, Pa./Montour) and freshman Heather Connor (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) also had two hits apiece in the loss.
The Panthers' final game was a 10-2 loss to UCF. Scarf and sophomore Jessica Thomas (Southlake, Texas/Carroll) scored Pittsburgh's runs but couldn't come back after allowing four runs in the third inning and five more in the fifth.
Pittsburgh will travel to Youngstown State for a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.
