Baseball Drops 7-3 Decision to Florida International
3/11/2004
HOMESTEAD, FLA.?The University of Pittsburgh baseball team suffered its third loss of the season as it was defeated 7-3 in the Homestead Challenge by Florida International on Thursday night at the Homestead Sports Complex.
Pittsburgh (5-3) was held to six hits and three runs by Florida International starting pitcher David Asher. The three runs by the Panthers? offense matches a season-low for offensive production and the three defensive miscues ultimately led to two Golden Panthers? runs.
The Panthers were led offensively by freshman rightfielder Peter Parise (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) who accounted for half of Pittsburgh?s six hits. Sophomore centerfielder Ben Copeland (Bradford, PA/Bradford) recorded a hit in the game to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
Pittsburgh starting pitcher T.J. Gornati (Kersey, PA/St. Mary?s) worked 4.2 innings and surrendered seven hits and four earned runs while striking out six Florida International hitters.
The Panthers return to action Friday afternoon when they take on Iona at Florida International in Miami. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
