Veteran NFL Coach Pete Carmichael Joins Panthers Football Staff

Carmichael will coach Pittsburgh's wide receivers.

       Pete Carmichael, who spent the last 10 seasons working in the National Football League, has been named wide receivers coach at the University of Pittsburgh, Head Coach Walt Harris announced today.

      Carmichael joins the Panthers after serving as an offensive assistant with the Chicago Bears from 2001-03. Prior to Chicago, he was the Cleveland Browns? offensive coordinator (2000) and the Jacksonville Jaguars? receivers coach (1994-99).

      ?The University of Pittsburgh has produced some outstanding receivers over the last seven years and we?ve found a great person to help us continue that trend in Pete Carmichael,? Harris said. ?Pete has a diverse resume that includes collegiate and pro experience. Although he will coach on the offensive side of the ball, I really like the fact that he has defensive experience as well. We are thrilled Pete is joining our family.?

      ?It?s great to be back in the college game,? Carmichael said. ?I couldn?t be at a better institution than the University of Pittsburgh. Coach Walt Harris and his staff have done an exceptional job revitalizing this program and I?m excited about getting to work.?

      While at Jacksonville, Carmichael placed a receiver in the Pro Bowl four consecutive years. The Jaguars had six 1,000-yard receivers during his tenure, including Jimmy Smith, who had an NFL-best 1,636 receiving yards in 1999.

      Before his NFL tenure, Carmichael spent 13 seasons at Boston College (1981-93), including the last three as receivers coach under Tom Coughlin. The Eagles earned New Year?s Day bowl berths in 1992 and 1993 as All-Big East quarterback Glenn Foley led a potent passing attack. From 1981-90, Carmichael tutored the defensive backs at Boston College.

      Carmichael began his coaching career in 1963 at Watchung Hills (N.J.) High School and coached at Clark (N.J.) High in 1964. In 1965, he spent a year at Virginia Military Institute and then went to Madisonboro (N.J.) High. That was followed by stints at New Hampshire (1967), Columbia (1974-77) and an initial tour at Boston College (1968-72). He was head coach at Trenton State College in 1973. After three years as an assistant at Columbia, he earned his second head coaching assignment from 1977-80 at the Merchant Marine Academy. 

      Carmichael played football at Montclair State College. He graduated from Montclair State in 1964 with a bachelor's degree in health and physical education. A native of Plainfield, N.J., he attended North Plainfield High, where he lettered three years in both football and baseball.

      Carmichael and his wife, Elaine, have two daughters, Layni (Ratcliffe) and Kathleen (Hight), and a son, Pete, who serves as an assistant coach with the San Diego Chargers under former standout Pitt center Marty Schottenheimer (1962-64). They also have eight grandchildren.
