PITTSBURGH
After closing to within five points, 13-8, on a three-pointer by Brooke Hughes (Wheelersburg, Ohio/South Webster) at the 12:43 mark of the first half, Pittsburgh allowed West Virginia to take control over the next eight minutes. The Mountaineers went on a 18-3 run, capped off by a layup from Yolanda Paige with 4:19 remaining the half.
The Panthers, who shot just 29 percent from the field in the first half, trailed 39-21 at the half. West Virginia connected on 50 percent of its shots from the field in the half, including 67 percent from behind the 3-point arc.
In the second half, Pittsburgh continued to struggle from the field and collected only 15 points for the entire half, shooting 24 percent from the field. The Mountaineers extended their lead to as many as 24 points (52-28) midway through the half before cruising to their second straight win over the Panthers.
For the game, Pittsburgh finished 27 percent (14 of 52) from the field and just 18 percent (2 of 11) from 3-point land. West Virginia hit 34 percent (22 of 64) of its field goals, but drained 82 percent (9 of 11) from the free-throw line.
Jennifer Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y./Martin Luther King) led the Panthers with eight points. Latoya Kincaid (West Helena, Ark./Central) pulled down a game-high 12 boards.
Sherell Sowho and Meg Bulger each tallied 13 points to lead West Virginia.
Pittsburgh travels to Boston College on Thursday for a Big East Conference matchup at the Silvio O. Conte Forum. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. as the Panthers attempt to snap an 11-game losing skid to the Eagles.
NOTES: West Virginia won both meetings this season between the rivals...Pittsburgh was outrebounded 52-34...both teams finished with 16 personal fouls...the Mountaineers had 11 points on fastbreaks compared to the Panthers? two.
