JAMAICA, N.Y. ? Latoya Kincaid poured in 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but Pittsburgh?s women?s basketball team could not overcome 26 turnovers as it fell at St. John?s on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall. The Panthers fell to 6-11 overall and 2-5 in the Big East as the Red Storm improved to 8-9 and 2-4 in the conference.
Pittsburgh turned the ball over 16 times in the first half and 10 in the second. St. John?s scored 30 points off of the Panthers? miscues, even though it committed 24 turnovers as well.
Early in the contest, Pittsburgh looked to gain the momentum as it built its largest lead, 23-12, on a Kincaid free throw midway through the first half. However, the Red Storm embarked on a 19-7 run to take their first lead since 2-1, as Angie Clark connected on a jumper, giving St. John?s a 31-30 advantage.
The Red Storm went to the locker room with a five-point lead, 39-34.
St. John?s lead ballooned to 21 points halfway through the second half before Pittsburgh cut the lead down to 10 points, 81-71, late in the game. The furious rally was too little too late as the Panthers dropped their third straight conference game.
For the game, Pittsburgh shot 37 percent (24 of 65) from the field but hit just 23 percent (4 of 17) from behind the 3-point arc. The Red Storm hit 49 percent (24 of 49) of its field goals and 33 percent (3 of 9) of its 3-pointers. The Panthers made 20-of-25 free throws (80 percent) while St. John?s drilled 32-of-44 (73 percent) shots from the charity stripe.
Jennifer Brown came off the bench and finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for Pittsburgh. Jessica Allen hit three 3-pointers and tallied 12 points for the game.
Kim MacMillan, Shamika Stevens and Reka Szavuly all pitched in 16 points to lead the Red Storm.
The Panthers return to action next Saturday, Jan. 31, as they host West Virginia at the Petersen Events Center. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. as Pittsburgh looks for revenge after a 65-58 setback to the Mountaineers earlier this season.
