Coach Harris Talks Following Sunday's Night's Scrimmage
8/24/2003
Walt Harris Quotes
On the offense overall in today?s scrimmage:
?I thought the offense did better today than they had been. They still had too many turnovers, but I thought they competed better and I thought we were tighter on our executions in order for us to do what we have to do on offense. Defensively, I thought they had some big turnovers. Obviously, they made some good rushes on the passer and some good stops on third downs. It was a solid day for our defense and a more competitive day for our offense.?
On the decision of quarterbacks:
?That?s why we?re scrimmaging to find out who we?re going to play, who can execute, who can make the play under pressure.?
On the decision of wide receivers:
?No, I think number one is really simple. Who the other guy is will be interesting. We?ll probably play a couple of them to see who continues to improve. We haven?t had many numbers the whole time, that?s always made it difficult for those guys who?ve had to run so much. I don?t think we can say we?ve had the best that we?ve had yet, let?s just see how it goes.?
On the offensive line:
?I think today they gave us a chance to have a chance. I think they gave the quarterback a better chance to let the ball go on time, so probably the biggest change in the scrimmage was the offensive line compared to last week.?
On the starting center position:
?I don?t like to comment much other than the generalities. But I think center Jon Schall should do well. I think Justin Belarski has been battling the hard road and we?ve been tough on him. I?m excited that he?s hung in there and hung tough and starting to look like a better football player. Right now, they?ve both been solid, so I think I?ll make that decision after the scrimmage or next week. Belarski?s done well, although he fumbled on the goal line, which we can?t have. We work on the exchange every day and there?s no excuse. We?re paralyzed if we can?t get that done, so he?s not in any firm footing until we handle that part.?
On the quarterbacks being ?live? for contact during Wednesday?s scrimmage:
?No, they won?t.?
On defensive back Josh Lay:
?He looks like he?s been performing at a level that he feels more comfortable, but we?re still evaluating it (starting cornerback position).?
On linebacker Lewis Moore:
?I?m excited for Lewis. He really had a good summer school. That?s what starts it. I challenge him academically and so does Coach Bray. He did a good job this summer. I challenged him in the conditioning part as well and now he?s carrying it over to being a dominant football player, which we always thought he could be.?
