2003 Panthers Football Season Headed For Sellout
8/20/2003
PITTSBURGH ? The University of Pittsburgh?s most anticipated college football season in 20 years is on the verge of being sold out.
The Panthers have sold a record 41,664 season tickets with less than three weeks remaining until the season opener at Heinz Field.
That total does not include the 10,000 student season tickets that will be sold prior to the opening game with Kent State Sept. 6.
As of Wednesday morning, less than 1,000 season-ticket locations were available. At the current selling pace, all non-club seat locations are expected to be sold out within the next two weeks. The Panthers ticket office anticipates beginning a season ticket waiting list for the 2004 season when tickets are sold out.
Season tickets on the club level are still available for $240. Club purchases require a $500 donation per seat to TEAM PITTSBURGH, the athletic department?s official fundraising body.
Single-game tickets are now on sale for select games depending upon availability.
?We are very excited and appreciative of the tremendous response we?ve received from our season-ticket sales,? Pittsburgh athletic director Jeff Long said. ?Our alumni, the city of Pittsburgh and the entire region are rallying around our football team and we anticipate a tremendous fan environment at Heinz Field this fall.?
Pittsburgh is ranked 10th in the country by the recently released Associated Press poll. It is the Panthers? highest preseason ranking since 1984. Seventeen starters return from last season?s 9-4 team that climaxed the 2002 campaign with a 38-13 rout of Oregon State in the Insight Bowl.
In addition to lofty preseason rankings, the Panthers boast one of their most attractive home schedules in recent memory.
Nationally renowned rivals Notre Dame (Oct. 11), Syracuse (Oct. 25), Virginia Tech (Nov. 8) and Miami (Nov. 29) all visit Pittsburgh this year. As has become a Panthers tradition at Heinz Field, the season opener with Kent State Sept. 6 will be a night contest, kicking off at 7 p.m. Pittsburgh will also host Ball State (Sept. 13) as part of the six-game home schedule.
