Women's Soccer Adds Monica Gerardo as Assistant Coach

PITTSBURGH?New University of Pittsburgh head women?s soccer coach Sue Moy-Chin announced the hiring of assistant coach Monica Gerardo Tuesday.
Gerardo brings incredible experience and on-field knowledge to the Panthers. While attending college at Notre Dame she competed for the Mexican National Team and has played for Mexico since 1998. She was a member of the 1999 World Cup team while still a college student at Notre Dame. The daughter of a Mexican father and Spanish mother, she could not pass up the 1998 offer. That year she logged field time against such international powers as Brazil, Germany, and Italy. She was also a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team pool from 1993-95. As an international player she has earned over 30 caps and tallied 10 goals while helping Mexico qualify for its first-ever Women?s World Cup.
Gerardo currently plays midfielder for the Washington Freedom of the Women?s United Soccer Association. Acquired in 2000 WUSA Draft, Gerardo is one of the most physical players on the Freedom roster and has blossomed into a starting role.
Gerardo was a key factor in Notre Dame?s success during her years of college play as well. She concluded her career as the second all-time leading scorer in school history with 73 goals and 44 assists which totaled 190 points. While playing at Notre Dame from 1995-98, Gerardo earned First Team All-Big East honors in 1995 and 1996, and Second Team All-Big East in 1998, the year she went to play for Mexico. In 1995, she was voted the 1995 Big East?s Rookie of the Year while helping ead Notre Dame to the NCAA Championship.
Gerardo was born in St. Paul, Minn. and now resides in Simi Valley, Calif. She majored in sociology and elementary education at Notre Dame.
