Larry Fitzgerald Named a Maxwell Award Candidate
10/28/2003
University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has been named to the 15-player list of candidates for the 2003 Maxwell Award, released today by the Maxwell Football Club.
The Maxwell Award is presented annually to the nation?s most outstanding football player.
The only sophomore on the Maxwell list, Fitzgerald (
The 6-3, 225-pound wideout leads the country in receiving yards per game (145.4 avg.), total receiving yards (1,018), touchdown catches (15), total TDs (15) and scoring (12.8 points per game). With two touchdown receptions versus Syracuse, Fitzgerald tied two NCAA records ? consecutive games with a TD catch (13, with Michigan State?s Charles Rogers) and combined TD catches as a freshman and sophomore (27, with Florida?s Jabar Gaffney).
In Big East annals, Fitzgerald?s 15 touchdown receptions this year have already established a new league record. He is one TD catch away from equaling Julius Dawkins? single-season school record of 16 set in 1981.
Moreover, Fitzgerald is on pace to break Pittsburgh?s single-season record for touchdowns held by Tony Dorsett, who scored 23 in 1976 en route to the Heisman Trophy. His 90 points are also threatening Dorsett?s single-season points mark of 140, also set in 1976.
