PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh head volleyball coach Chris Beerman has announced the signing of Jessica McDonald and Madelyn Egan to play for the Panthers this fall.
"Jessica and Madelyn complete a very strong 2002 recruiting class for Panther volleyball," said Beerman. "Both players are winners and tough competitors with great, hard-working attitudes, and both have just scratched the surface of their potential as volleyball athletes. This recruiting class will be integral to our future success and will be a lot of fun to watch compete during the next four years."
McDonald, a 6-0 middle hitter, is a native of Valencia, Calif., and a graduate of William S. Hart High. A transfer from Boise State, McDonald will have three years of eligibility remaining. While at Boise State, McDonald was selected the team's Most Improved Player. She played in 75 games and averaged 1.75 kills and 0.88 blocks.
During her high school career, McDonald helped her team to four Foothill League championships and to the second round of the CIF Championships in both her sophomore and senior seasons. As a senior in 2000, McDonald earned first team All-Foothill league honors after leading her team in blocks and ranking among the top three in kills. McDonald twice earned Most Improved Player honors and was named honorable mention Foothill League as a junior.
McDonald was also a member of the swimming and track and field teams at Hart High. As a senior McDonald received the Scholar-Athlete Award and the National Academic Achievement Award.
Egan is a 6-3 middle hitter from Salt Lake City, Utah and a graduate of Brighton High. As a senior, Egan helped her team at Brighton to a 10-2 record, the region championship and a sixth-place finish in the state. She averaged a team-high six kills and three blocks per game as a junior and senior and was a two-time all-region honoree. Egan served as a team captain as a junior and was named the Most Valuable Player.
As a senior, Egan earned academic all-state honors and was named Brighton High School's Most Valuable Person. She additionally was a member of the varsity basketball team as a freshman and sophomore and has participated in three years of volleyball at the junior national level.
McDonald and Egan join Megan McGrane (Muncie, Ind./Delta High) and Kimberly Norris (Fostoria, Ohio/Hopewell-Loudon) who signed this past fall.
