5/24/2002
PITTSBURGH - University of Pittsburgh head women's basketball coach Traci Waites has announced the appointment of Alvis Rogers to the Panthers' staff. Rogers, who will primarily work with the post players, will serve as the first assistant coach.
"I am excited to have Alvis join our staff because he will be a great asset to our program," Waites said. "His playing and coaching experience is what caught my attention and he is aware of what we are trying to build here at Pittsburgh. He has a great understanding of the game and he will have a solid impact on our team because of his coaching and personal demeanor."
Rogers most recently served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Duquesne University where he was responsible for recruiting, game preparation, scouting and film editing while coaching both the guards and post players. He also served as the Assistant Academic Coordinator for Athletics at Duquesne before moving into coaching with the Dukes.
"This is a great opportunity for an advancement in my career," said Rogers. "Mr. Pederson has done tremendous things in a short time and has the athletic department heading in the right direction. Coach Waites is an outstanding person who obviously cares about her players and coaching staff and I am excited to be a part of the women's basketball program and the athletic department."
In addition, Rogers has extensive international basketball experience, playing professionally in several different countries from 1984-88, including Australia, Sweden, Greece, Belgium and Ireland. He also has worked numerous basketball camps such as the Five Star Basketball Camp at Robert Morris, Wake Forest's Bob Staak's Basketball Camp and the B/C Basketball Camp in Georgia.
Rogers began his coaching career as an assistant for Greensboro Day School (1989-91), where he helped the program to a state title. He then went on to coach at Pittsburgh's Carlynton High School (1992-93) before taking his first collegiate position at Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. (1993-94).
A graduate of Wake Forest, Rogers earned Freshman All-America honors following the 1978-79 campaign and was the runner-up for the Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year. A member of the 1980 All-ACC team, Rogers was named the Demon Deacons' Co-Most Valuable Player and led his squad to two NCAA Tournament appearances as well as the semifinals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
