Softball Doubleheader With Syracuse Postponed
4/29/2002
PITTSBURGH- In a doubleheader matchup postponed from April 13, the Pittsburgh and Syracuse softball games scheduled for today have again been cancelled due to inclement weather that postponed games in the Big East Conference yesterday.
Syracuse was to play two games at Rutgers on Sunday but those games were rained out and will be played today, the original makeup date for the doubleheader between the Orangewomen and the Panthers.
No makeup date has been announced but the games should have bearing on the final Big East Conference standings.
The top four of 11 teams make it to the Big East postseason tournament in Salem, Va. St. John's, Providence and Connecticut have already been eliminated, leaving eight teams battling for four spots. Notre Dame is in first place with a 13-1 record, followed by Villanova with a 13-3 mark. Seton Hall is currently third with 20 pts. (10-6), followed by Boston College (18 pts., 9-7), Virginia Tech and Rutgers (16 pts., 8-8), Syracuse (14 pts., 7-5) and the Panthers (10 pts., 5-9).
Teams are scheduled to play 20 games in the conference so the Orangewomen have eight remaining. Notre Dame and Pittsburgh each have six games left on the schedule while the other five teams in contention all have four games remaining.
The Panthers will play at non-conference rival Robert Morris tomorrow for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Pittsburgh has two games apiece with Brown, Providence and Boston College after the doubleheader with the Colonials, plus the matchup with Syracuse still to be scheduled.
