CINCINNATI, Ohio ? Pittsburgh's three-game winning streak was snapped by Xavier on Saturday afternoon at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati. The Panthers fell behind early by a count of 18-2 and couldn't get any closer than 13 points the rest of the way, losing 82-65.
Senior guards Laine Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) and Brooke Stewart (North Versailles, Pa./East Allegheny) combined to score 32 of the Panthers' 65 points in the losing effort.
Selwyn had just four points at halftime but came on to score 13 in the second frame while Stewart added 13 of her 15 points after the break.
Pittsburgh (6-3) fell behind 1:08 into the game on a three-pointer by Reetta Piipari and never led during the contest. Xavier (7-1) built an 18-2 lead over the game's first six minutes with Piipari scoring eight of the Musketeers' points on three field goals and a free throw.
The Xavier lead swelled to 22 points at 34-10 with 6:28 to go in the first half before the Panthers went on a 13-6 run to close the half. The two teams traded baskets throughout the first eight minutes of the second half before Selwyn converted on two jump shots to close the gap to 13 points at 53-40 with 11:13 remaining.
An 11-1 run by the Musketeers had the lead back up to 23 points, however, and Xavier led by as many as 27 with 3:26 to go. The Panthers closed the game with a 16-6 run, including three three-pointers by redshirt freshman Jessica Allen (Salem, Conn./New London) and another by Stewart, her third trey of the game.
Amy Waugh led Xavier with 22 points on 6 of 13 shooting, including a 5-of-11 mark from beyond the three-point line. Piipari added 17 points and a game-high six assists for the Musketeers. Senior Dallas Williams (Mason, Ohio/Mason), in her homecoming performance, led the Panthers with seven rebounds and chipped in eight points offensively.
The Musketeers shot 49.2 percent from the field (29 for 59) for the game while the Panthers shot just 34.9 percent (22 of 63). Pittsburgh's next action will be at the Petersen Events Center on Dec. 29 against Norfolk State. The Panthers are 4-0 in the brand new facility thus far in 2002-03.
