Softball Adds Seven Recruits For 2004 Season

PITTSBURGH ? University of Pittsburgh softball head coach Michelle Phalen has announced the signing of seven recruits for the 2004 season.
Joining the Panthers next fall will be: Laura Belardinelli (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott), Meghan Bostick (Colleyville, Texas/Grapevine), Christina D?Arpa (Staten Island, N.Y./Moore Catholic), Joey Scarf (Humble, Texas/Humble), Heather Connor (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg), Morgan Howard (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny), and Sheena Hellon (Sacramento, Calif./Cordova).
Belardinelli, a pitcher, has broke five school records at Union-Endicott already, including lowest earned run average (0.36). She is a co-captain of the varsity team and has been named to the all-conference, all-state and all-Northeast region teams as well as earning Scholar-Athlete honors.
Bostick, also a pitcher, holds the single season and career strikeout records at Grapevine High School. She earned first team all-district honors as a junior in 2002 and is also an All-American Scholar, a National Honor Roll student, and a winner of the National English Merit Award.
D?Arpa has played infield for Moore Catholic High, summer ball for the New Jersey Charmers and fall ball for Team New Jersey. She is a three-time Daily News All-Star as well as a three-time all-city honoree and team most valuable player. Also a standout in the classroom, D?Arpa is a member of the National Honor Society.
Scarf plays both the outfield and second base for Humble High School as well as the Texas Storm Gold tournament team. She earned all-district Freshman of the Year honors in 2000 and was an all-district First Team selection for her first three years at Humble. Scarf was a Golden Glove Award winner as a junior in 2002.
Connor is an all-conference and all-county shortstop at Muhlenberg High School. She has also played some catcher during her time with the Spring-Ford Stealers tournament team. She is a member of Who?s Who Among American High School Students.
Howard is a senior at nearby North Allegheny High School and also plays in the outfield for the Pittsburgh Patriots summer team. She has been recognized as an all-section player by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and helped the Tigers to the 2002 PIAA championship.
Hellon, a shortstop at Cordova High, also plays for the California Breeze tournament team. She continues the line of California players joining the Pittsburgh softball ranks. She was named to the Sacramento Bee All-City First Team and is a three-time member of the Sierra Valley All-Conference Team. Additionally, Hellon was named the Sierra Valley Conference MVP as a junior last season.
Pittsburgh opens the 2003 season at the University of Houston Tournament on Feb. 14 with a doubleheader against Northern Iowa and Stephen F. Austin.
