Laine Selwyn Named Big East Player of the Week

PITTSBURGH?University of Pittsburgh senior guard Laine Selwyn, who led the Panthers? women?s basketball team to a 92-88 overtime upset of nationally ranked Penn State, has been named the Big East Conference Player of the Week. Selwyn (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs) was instrumental in the Panthers? upset of the Lady Lions, posting her second consecutive double-double. She poured in a team-high 26 points to go along with 10 rebounds in the victory, while adding five assists and three steals in 43 minutes of action. Selwyn scored 16 of her points and had six of her boards in the second half. Trailing by two points with one second left in regulation, Selwyn knocked down two free throws to send the game into overtime. She made 12-of-13 free throws on the day and has made 39 of 43 (91 percent) this year, which ranks third in the Big East. Selwyn is averaging 14.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 6.4 assists on the year and is second in the conference in steals, snagging 2.86 per game (20 total). This is the second time in Selwyn?s career she has received the award. She also was named the honoree on Feb. 11, 2002, after she posted the school?s first triple-double in a win over St. John?s. Pittsburgh is back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 17, as it hosts Eastern Kentucky. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in the Petersen Events Center.
