11/26/2002
PITTSBURGH ? University of Pittsburgh wrestling coach Rande Stottlemyer has announced the signing of Matt Kocher and Drew Headlee to letters-of-intent for the 2003-04 season.
Kocher (State College, Pa./State College) is 84-19 in three years at State College and was 36-2 as a junior last season. He placed third at the PIAA Class AAA Championships at 135 pounds and placed second in the Powerade Tournament. He is projected to wrestle at 149 pounds for the Panthers.
"Matt is a real talented wrestler who will help us immediately next season," Stottlemyer said. "He works hard and comes from a wonderful family. I'm elated that Matt will be here."
Headlee (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg) was a PIAA Class AAA champion at 112 pounds last season as a junior, compiling a record of 40-5 at Waynesburg High. He also was a Powerade Tournament champion and was named Outstanding Wrestler. He is a Pennsylvania freestyle and Greco-Roman champion and is projected to wrestle at 125 pounds in 2003-04. As a sophomore at Waynesburg, Headlee was 35-6 and placed fourth in the state at 103 pounds. He won his first Powerade championship as well that year.
"Getting a wrestler from Waynesburg the caliber of Drew is big for our program," Stottlemyer said. "He is a hard worker and should be even better in his senior year."
The Panthers will host the Bloomsburg Huskies in their home and Eastern Wrestling League opener tonight at Fitzgerald Field House. The meet will begin at 7:30 p.m.
