PITTSBURGH-In its first competition in 48 days, the Pittsburgh women's swimming and diving team fell to Harvard, 161-139, at Trees Pool on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers held a 24-14 lead after the two diving events when sophomore Jen O'Brien (Verona, Pa./Penn Hills) and senior Moreen O'Brien (Springfield, Ill./Springfield) won the 1-meter and 3-meter competitons, respectively. Moreen O'Brien also came in second place on the 1-meter board.
Harvard (5-1) came back to win nine of the 14 swimming events, garnering enough points to overcome the diving deficit and defeat the Panthers, now 2-3 in 2001-02.
Emily Colley (Pace, Fla./Pace) was the top Panther swimmer with victories in the 1000 and 500 freestyle races. She won the 1000 free by 11.14 seconds over Harvard's Stephanie Greco and the 500 free by 6.17 seconds over the Crimson's Whitney Henderson.
The other individual event winners for the Panthers were Ryan Redman (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.32), senior Karen Thibodeau (Waterloo, Ontario/Bluevale Collegiate) in the 200 backstroke (2:05.62) and Carolyne Savini (Egg Harbour Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) in the 200 individual medley (2:10.10).
Harvard's Molly Ward was the top swimmer of the day, winning the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events as well as leading the Crimson to a victory in the 400 freestyle relay by coming back on the last leg to edge Redman.
The Panthers will join the men's team and travel to West Virginia to take on the Mountaineers in a Big East meet on Jan. 12.
