No. 21 Wrestling Team Pins Duquesne, F&M and EMU in Three Dual Meet Victories.

PITTSBURGH-With 10 falls, three major decisions and two technical falls, the No. 21 Pittsburgh wrestling team dispatched of Duquesne (43-4), Franklin & Marshall (48-5) and Eastern Michigan (36-12) on Saturday to earn three victories and upped its record to 10-3 for the 2001-02 season.
Heavyweight Jacob Lininger (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) was very impressive in going 3-0 for the day. He scored his ninth and 10th falls of the season to climb into a tie with former Panther Pat Santoro (1986-87) for sixth most pins in a season in Panther history. His three victories also gave him a 28-7 record for the season which ties him with John Withrow (1994-95) for ninth most wins in a season by a sophomore in Pittsburgh annals.
Other big winners for the Panthers included sophomore Zachariah Doll (Quakertown, Pa./The Hill School), who won all three of his matches with pins at 157 pounds. Doll is now 12-4 for the season with seven falls. In his career, Doll has 16 falls, which places him into a tie with Hugh Peery (1952-54) for eighth most in Panther history.
Justin Giovinco (Norristown, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) joined the pin parade for the Panthers with two falls in his two matches in a total time of just 1:39. He is now 16-4 in 2001-02 with five falls and his career pin total is now at 18, seventh most in Pittsburgh annals.
Redshirt junior James Thornton (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and senior Shawn Amistade (Washington, Pa./Trinity) mopped up the small weight classes at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively, by combining to go 6-0 with two falls and two major decisions. The other 3-0 wrestler for the Panthers was senior David Sandberg (Spokane, Wash./North Central) at 197 pounds with a major decision and a pin.
Pittsburgh also got strong performances from Andy Villecco (Mickleton, Pa./Kingsway Regional), Carl Fronhofer (Salem, N.Y./Salem) and Rich Boden (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway). Villecco was 2-1 with a technical fall, Fronhofer was 2-0 and Boden was 2-0, including a win at 165 pounds even though he is listed at two classes below at 149 pounds.
In the other dual meets, Eastern Michigan topped Franklin & Marshall, 31-7, and Duquesne, 23-19, in the closest match of the day, and Duquesne defeated Franklin & Marshall, 34-8.
The Panthers will get back to the Eastern Wrestling League for the final five dual meets of the season starting with a road match at Virginia Tech on Sat., Jan. 26 at 2 p.m.
