VILLANOVA, PA - The Panthers softball team dropped a pair of games to host Villanova (40-8/15-5) in a Big East Conference doubleheader on May 5. The Wildcats claimed wins of 6-1 in game one and 2-0 in game two.
Pittsburgh jumped out in front in the third inning of game one, when senior Tiffany Barrett (Pittsburgh, Pa./West Allegheny) roped a two-out single to score pinch-runner Beth Steidle (Pottsville, Pa./Pottsville) from third base. But the lead was short-lived as Villanova came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third. The Wildcats then took the lead with two runs in the fifth inning before adding three more runs in the sixth to roll to the 6-1 win.
The Panthers were limited to just two hits in the game by Barrett and freshman Beth Gill (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair). Sophomore Nikki Gasti (Carmichaels, Pa./Carmichaels) pitched a complete game and struck out two batters in the loss.
Wildcat Keri Stoller pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts to lead Villanova to a 2-0 shutout in game two. The Wildcats got on the board in the second inning with an RBI single by Josey Mikulyuk. Villanova then used just one more run in the fourth to clinch the win.
Junior Gina Bessolo (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood) received the loss for the Panthers, pitching six innings with two strikeouts.
Pittsburgh (13-38/5-13) will visit Rutgers on Sunday, May 6, for a Big East doubleheader in New Brunswick, N.J.
